Reduce Stress, Enhance Well-being and Support Friends with Hugs

Hug someone close to you! National Hugging Day or Global Hug Day is January 21, 2025, though you can give hugs any day.

National Hugging Day was first introduced in 1986 by Reverend Kevin Zaborney in Michigan to spread more kindness around the world through hugs. In 1992, National Hugging Day received more media coverage and helped this day become popular. During the 2020 pandemic, virtual hugs became popular to help people during that challenging time. Hugs help convey human connection, support and empathy.

Some facts about National Hugging Day:

  • Hugging can help reduce stress and increase oxytocin levels.

  • Hugging can offer emotional support.

  • Hugging also helps with feelings of powerlessness.

Here are some things you can do to help spread the love on National Hug Day:

  • Organize a safe hug friend event.

  • Promote a safe space that discusses mental health and working with well-being.

  • Hug a stuffed animal.

The Future of Connection for Women

Meagan Fuller
Meagan Fuller

Hello, my name is Meagan. I am currently a senior at Belhaven University. I am majoring in Theatre and minoring in Creative Writing. I am happy to join Her Nexx Chapter as a volunteer. This journey will allow me to work with a diverse group of women. My academic journey is rooted in storytelling. Therefore, I am excited for this opportunity to write about various topics for women to help them grow. In my free time, I enjoy listening to music, writing fiction that focuses on empowering women, reading, developing my acting skills and yoga. My short stories, plays and poems appear in several publications (Pleiades Literary Magazine, Write for Mississippi, Belhaven University’s The Brogue). Oh, by the way, I am a cat lover.
