Take your Fur baby to work for National Take Your Dog to Work Day on June 26th. Pet Sitters International, founded in 1994 by Patti Moran, first introduced National Take Your Dog to Work Day in 1999 to help working pet owners build a connection with their dogs. Annually, approximately 300 companies are said to participate in National Take Your Dog to Work Day.

Dogs have been faithful companions to humans throughout history. So, it is no surprise that having pets, especially dogs, can improve the work environment. There are many benefits to taking your dog or other pets to work with you. The Human Animal Bond Research Institute reported that 90% of workers are more engaged and connected in a pet-friendly work environment. A survey done by the United States Chamber of Commerce reported that 94% of the people who responded to the survey supported having pets at work. Research shows that having dogs at work improves overall mental health and productivity, according to a study at a manufacturing company in North Carolina.

Not all companies have a pet policy, so it is important to get prior permission. Understanding your dog’s temperament is the key to a successful day. Your dog should have a social nature and no history of biting so that you can safely introduce them to your coworkers and boss. Make sure you bring water and a leash and decide in advance where you can take the dog to the bathroom. If you cannot bring your dog to work, you can still participate by donating to local shelters to support other dogs or go to pet fairs and other events that celebrate and protect dogs and other pets.

Don’t worry if you don’t have a dog; although National Take Your Dog to Work Day is not limited to dogs. Take Your Pet to Work Week is June 22-26.

Hello, my name is Meagan. I am currently a senior at Belhaven University. I am majoring in Theatre and minoring in Creative Writing. I am happy to join Her Nexx Chapter as a volunteer. This journey will allow me to work with a diverse group of women. My academic journey is rooted in storytelling. Therefore, I am excited for this opportunity to write about various topics for women to help them grow. In my free time, I enjoy listening to music, writing fiction that focuses on empowering women, reading, developing my acting skills and yoga. My short stories, plays and poems appear in several publications (Pleiades Literary Magazine, Write for Mississippi, Belhaven University’s The Brogue). Oh, by the way, I am a cat lover.
