A First-Generation College Student’s Journey to Achieving Her Higher Education

I am not sure where to start with my story, but I know it begins with my mom who had to work two jobs to support my sister and me. I originally lacked the belief in myself that it would be impossible to enroll in college. I was a child who had no access to shortcuts to careers, and we had financial limitations. Due to limited financial means, I did not receive the opportunities to succeed as most teenagers did before going to college.
It was even difficult to learn in public school, as I, unfortunately, learned differently than the other children. I was born with a learning disability and throughout high school teachers gave me information about what comes next after graduating, but they always excluded college.
My mom did not allow such negative ideas into my head. She encouraged me to take the next step toward receiving an education. So, I applied, was accepted, and succeeded. This year I achieved my goal, and I graduated with a Bachelor of English degree. There are no limitations on what you can accomplish, and it should not matter where you come from. Education is for everyone, whether from diverse backgrounds, sexuality, or age. I struggled for so many years to get where I am today.
Do not think it is impossible for you to get an education. You can surpass your limits, and you will be amazed at what you can accomplish.

The Future of Connection for Women
As an Indigenous woman, I want to show my Native American Community that we can surpass the financial limits and fulfill our education. As an educated person, I want to improve the knowledge and access of Native American history within the education system. I want to represent my Native American community and my Indigenous culture through writing. I want to promote Indigenous stories because I do not want our knowledge of Indigenous culture to be lost forever. The only way I can improve it is to continue my education and surpass the limits.
