National Eggnog Day is celebrated every year on December 24 in the US. Eggnog has long been a beloved holiday drink, and its history is richer than most people realize. Traditionally, eggnog is made from milk, cream, sugar, whipped eggs, and spices, with cinnamon or nutmeg often added for extra warmth.
Some of the earliest mentions of eggnog in America date back to the Jamestown settlers in 1607, who were believed to have enjoyed early versions of the drink.1 Even George Washington had his own famously strong eggnog recipe, which included rum, whiskey, and sherry.2 The name “eggnog” is thought to come from the word noggin, a small wooden cup used for serving drinks. While its exact origin is debated, many trace it either to medieval European milk-based drinks or to East Anglia, England.3 Eggnog became a popular holiday beverage in the United States during the 1800s and is also known as “egg milk punch.”4 Today, eggnog doesn’t have to be made with raw eggs thanks to pasteurized options and substitutes, and you can even find eggnog ice cream for a festive twist.
If you’re celebrating National Eggnog Day, there are plenty of ways to join in the fun. You can try eggnog ice cream, make your own homemade batch, or enjoy the drink hot or cold, depending on your preference. No matter how you sip it, eggnog remains a nostalgic, comforting part of holiday traditions across the country.
