Updated: 6 hours ago

Enjoy your waffles! National Waffle Day is Sunday, August 24th, and it is a day to celebrate how this breakfast item came to be!

Here are some fun facts about this day:

  • The day is connected to inventor Cornelius Swartwout who created the waffle iron on August 24, 1869.

  • Waffle irons and even waffles originated around the 14th century.

  • National Waffle Day is celebrated in different countries.

  • Wafer and Waffle have the same root word “weben” meaning “to weave.”

  • A waffle is close to a wafer which has religious connotations.

  • Waffles date back all the way to ancient Greece, and they were flat cakes called obleios.

  • Waffles were originally seen as a dessert.

  • Waffles arrived in France and Belgium where the two countries changed the waffle to a more unique texture and flavor.

  • The first known recipe for waffles was found in a manuscript entitled Le Ménagier de Paris.

Here are some things to do on National Waffle Day:

  • Try a recipe for waffles.

  • Find a place that makes waffles like Waffle House.

  • Write a poem about waffles.

  • Cook with a waffle iron.

  • Top your waffle with maple syrup, fresh fruit, sliced almonds, feta cheese or other items.

  • Throw a waffle party.

Take delight in enjoying your waffles!
