Every year on March 29th, National Mermaid Day invites us to celebrate these mystical, shimmering, and mysterious beings who have splashed their way into our hearts and have enchanted us for thousands of years.
Diving into The Tale
Mermaids have been a part of art, literature, and even pop culture throughout history. They are easily identifiable with their fish-like tails, but represent different things to people around the world. Atargatis is a Syrian goddess known for protecting the good fortune of her people. Mami Wata (“Mother Water”) is a powerful water spirit in African traditions and appears in countless tales and artworks. Ningyo, a Japanese mermaid, appears in stories dating back to 619 AD. Greek mythology is filled with sea nymphs and Nereids who share mermaid-like qualities.
The first known mention of mermaids appears around 1000 BC, showing just how long humans have been fascinated by these creatures. By 1078, mermaids were already being carved into chapel walls in England, a testament to their enduring presence in art and storytelling. Explorers like Christopher Columbus claimed to have spotted them, although he likely saw manatees rather than magical maidens of the sea. The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen remains one of the most beloved mermaid tales ever written. Mermaid sightings continue to pop up in unexpected places. In 2012, workers in Zimbabwe reported encounters that stirred up local legends.
A Drop of Magic
If you’re looking for ways to immerse yourself in the fun, Mermaid Day offers plenty of inspiration.
Places like Weeki Wachee State Park in Florida keep the magic alive with their famous underwater mermaid shows. Coney Island’s Mermaid Parade, which began in 1983, continues to be a vibrant celebration of creativity, costume, and community. You could explore the Mermaid Museum in Aberdeen, Washington. Each year, Mermaid conventions around the country also welcome fans of all ages, offering a chance to meet fellow enthusiasts and celebrate together.
Mermaid Day is all about recapturing a sense of wonder and expanding your imagination. Regardless of whether you want to plunge in or just get your toes wet, it’s a day to let a little magic wash over you.

The Future of Connection for Women

Hello, my name is Meagan. I am currently a senior at Belhaven University. I am majoring in Theatre and minoring in Creative Writing. I am happy to join Her Nexx Chapter as a volunteer. This journey will allow me to work with a diverse group of women. My academic journey is rooted in storytelling. Therefore, I am excited for this opportunity to write about various topics for women to help them grow. In my free time, I enjoy listening to music, writing fiction that focuses on empowering women, reading, developing my acting skills and yoga. My short stories, plays and poems appear in several publications (Pleiades Literary Magazine, Write for Mississippi, Belhaven University’s The Brogue). Oh, by the way, I am a cat lover.
