Celebrate the beautiful rainforests! It is time to protect our endangered rainforests. World Rainforest Day is on June 22, and it is a great time to recognize these beautiful important landmarks. Rainforests are found on every continent except Antarctica.
Here are some facts about rainforests:
Rainforests are self-watering through transpiration, where plants create a cloud of moisture over the rainforest.
20% of the oxygen humans breathe and the fresh water we drink is attributed to the rainforests in the Amazon.
Logging, agriculture and mining are said to be declining rainforests.
Deforestation affects climate change as fewer forests allow carbon dioxide and greenhouse gases to go into the air.
20% of the rainforest has been destroyed in 50 years.
Many plants in the rainforest are said to be used to create medicine including anti-cancer drugs.
There are tropical rainforests close to the equator and temperate rainforests close to mountainous areas.
A rainforest is said to be made up of four layers which are the emergent, understory, forest floor and the upper canopy.
Rainforests can have trees that are 200 feet tall.
Deforestation is a danger to rainforests worldwide.
Rainforests are home to endangered animals such as orangutans, jaguars and Sumatran rhinos.
Here are some things you can do to help the rainforests:
Support a local zoo.
If you shop for oil, look for the Roundtable Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) to support rainforests.

The Future of Connection for Women

Hello, my name is Meagan. I am currently a senior at Belhaven University. I am majoring in Theatre and minoring in Creative Writing. I am happy to join Her Nexx Chapter as a volunteer. This journey will allow me to work with a diverse group of women. My academic journey is rooted in storytelling. Therefore, I am excited for this opportunity to write about various topics for women to help them grow. In my free time, I enjoy listening to music, writing fiction that focuses on empowering women, reading, developing my acting skills and yoga. My short stories, plays and poems appear in several publications (Pleiades Literary Magazine, Write for Mississippi, Belhaven University’s The Brogue). Oh, by the way, I am a cat lover.
