National Loving Day Highlights Interracial Marriage and Racial Justice

Updated: Jul 16

National Loving Day

Love whoever you want. National Loving Day is on June 12th.  This day is meant to remember the 1967 court case Loving vs. Virginia where different raced couples were originally not allowed to marry. Now, because of the Loving vs. Virginia court case, people of different races can marry. The Lovings’ case highlights racial justice.

Facts about National Loving Day:

  • Mildred and Richard Loving were a mixed-race couple who could not marry because interracial marriage was illegal in their state of Virginia.

  • The Lovings got arrested due to their marriage.

  • The Lovings took legal action, and the Supreme Court ruled in favor of allowing interracial marriage.

Here is what you can do on National Loving Day:

  • Research the Loving vs. Virginia case through books, podcasts, and documentaries.

  • Explore museums that have themes of racial justice.

  • Read up on interracial stories online.

Join us in Dallas, Texas August 29-31 for Inspire Her Nexx Chapter, a transformative 3-day women’s conference. We intend to speak to women’s spirits, cultivate their souls and pamper their hearts in a space where diversity and differences are seen as strengths and where women can actively participate.

Hello, my name is Meagan. I am currently a senior at Belhaven University. I am majoring in Theatre and minoring in Creative Writing. I am happy to join Her Nexx Chapter as a volunteer. This journey will allow me to work with a diverse group of women. My academic journey is rooted in storytelling. Therefore, I am excited for this opportunity to write about various topics for women to help them grow. In my free time, I enjoy listening to music, writing fiction that focuses on empowering women, reading, developing my acting skills and yoga. My short stories, plays and poems appear in several publications (Pleiades Literary Magazine, Write for Mississippi, Belhaven University’s The Brogue). Oh, by the way, I am a cat lover.
