Celebrate the Day Motion Pictures Were Born!

A film clapboard reads "The Director," Roll 3, Scene 7A, Take 8. Hands hold it on set, camera and brick wall in background. Date: 05-26-2018.

December 28th is National Short Film Day. The Film Movement organization recognized this day in 2019. The history of short films started December 28, 1895, when the Lumiere brothers screened the first short film showcasing everyday life. After this, short films became more popular and remained important for theatres, especially during the silent era with Charlie Chaplin shorts.

Short films are unique with creative freedom, emotional impact, and they serve as a platform for emerging talent. With versatile storytelling, they are accessible and affordable.

The Oscars, Sundance, and PBS also have a short film category to recognize great short films.

How to Celebrate National Short Film Day:

  • Try to attend short film screenings. If you have local film festivals in your area or have the ability to attend an international film festival, film festivals can offer amazing short films to watch.

  • Try to make your own short film. You can have fun telling a unique story through scriptwriting, editing and using camera techniques.

  • The New Yorker Screening Room offers many award-winning films to watch: https://www.newyorker.com/culture/screening-room

  • PBS also has a list of short films by season and year: https://www.pbs.org/show/pbs-online-film-festival/.

National Short Film Day is a day to celebrate the creativity of visual and film storytelling.

Meagan Fuller

Hello, my name is Meagan. I am currently a senior at Belhaven University. I am majoring in Theatre and minoring in Creative Writing. I am happy to join Her Nexx Chapter as a volunteer. This journey will allow me to work with a diverse group of women. My academic journey is rooted in storytelling. Therefore, I am excited for this opportunity to write about various topics for women to help them grow. In my free time, I enjoy listening to music, writing fiction that focuses on empowering women, reading, developing my acting skills and yoga. My short stories, plays and poems appear in several publications (Pleiades Literary Magazine, Write for Mississippi, Belhaven University’s The Brogue). Oh, by the way, I am a cat lover.
