March 9 is National Barbie Day. Barbie was introduced in 1959 by her creator, the co-founder of Mattel, Ruth Handler. Named after Ruth’s daughter Barbara, Barbie was created to “allow girls to imagine what their lives could be like in the future.” Barbie’s motivational motto is “You can be anything!” which encourages girls around the world to dream big and go after what they imagine for themselves. Barbie was inducted into the Toy Hall of Fame in 1988, cementing her status as a cultural icon. Today, every minute, there are 100 Barbie dolls sold.
Humble Beginnings to the Beach Life
Based on a German adult doll, Handler wanted to offer little girls another option to play with besides baby dolls. She created Barbie as a wholesome role model and family-friendly toy. Throughout the years, Barbie has had over 200 careers, expanding what little girls thought possible to achieve.
Barbie has mirrored and shaped cultural conversations about womanhood, aspiration, representation, and identity. In recent years, a range of body types, skin tones, and abilities has been introduced so that all girls could see themselves in her.
Barbie represents an important part of my childhood. I used to ask my parents to buy me Barbie dolls, and I played with them frequently. Role-playing inspired me to explore and embrace my individuality. I am glad I grew up playing with Barbie dolls rather than smartphones and tablets. I still have Barbie dolls from my childhood; furthermore, I still buy Barbie dolls for my collection. I believe that if collecting Barbies makes you happy, then you should NOT deny yourself things that continue to bring you joy simply because you are no longer a child.
Living the Dream
Barbie’s popularity and influence have gone beyond the dolls themselves. Families and friends have bonded over the doll and passed on favorites from one generation to the next. Barbie lovers discuss their favorite dolls online, bring out their collections, share them with their kids, and watch the iconic Barbie movies.
Barbie devotees also embrace an aesthetic called “Barbiecore.” Inspired largely by the 2023 Barbie movie, Barbiecore is a bright-pink, hyper-feminine aesthetic inspired by Barbie’s signature style and amplified by nostalgia and celebrity fashion. It blends bold color, maximalism, and a playful confidence that channels Barbie’s world.
